- Children’s Council in Nebraska Reaches Out To 7th Graders
GLW Children’s Council, Inc., proud users of Project ALERT in Burwell, NE, is having a Start Smart Retreat on August 25th & 26th thanks to a county aid grant. All 7th graders from Garfield, Loup and Wheeler counties are invited, along with their parents, for an overnight retreat. They will be addressing marijuana, Internet safety and alcohol abuse during breakout sessions, along with tubing down river to Camp Kaleo where they will spend the night in cabins. But, the fun doesn’t end there - there will be a trust course, for a true bonding experience, a scavenger hunt and a fun-filled evening roasting s’mores over a bonfire. They will also be giving out t-shirts to the students.
In an effort to stay in touch and keep their students motivated, the Council will be checking in with them every quarter. They will ask the students to wear their t-shirts and put the names of those who do into a drawing for prizes; they will send cards the students fill out at the retreat back to them around Christmas as a reminder of what they learned; then next spring they will be hosting a picnic and inviting the students and their families to attend.
- August is Happiness Happens Month!
Happiness Happens Month was established in 2000 to remind us that happiness is present in our lives despite the global and personal problems we face. The main goals of the month are to recognize and express that happiness.
Parents and educators can celebrate Happiness Happens Month with youth by taking time out each day to list and discuss happy experiences. Smile and enjoy!
